The origin of the office of deacon is believed to be in the choosing and laying on of hands of Stephen and six others told at the beginning of Acts 6 which describes the appointment of seven persons to minister to the needs of the community. “…the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food….” (Acts 6:1)
The noun deacon comes from the verb to “wait on”. The Greek noun for deacon can also be translated as “minister” or “servant”.
“It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith…” Book of Order
